Indeed, it is a time we have to start talking about the next iPad from Apple. As per Apple’s annual iPad release schedule, the third version of the gadget is to hit stores in March or April. The Cupertino technology maker unveiled iPad 2 in March this year. The company will be planning a more powerful iPad this year especially when competition from Android tablets has toughened up.

Many reports have gone on to state that the new iPad will have an entire overhaul from its predecessor. The Apple gossip blog DigiTimes recently reported that the new iPad will be an entirely new product with a renovated body and design. The tech blog also exposed the chance for a small iPad version late next year, called iPad mini. But, Apple has not yet uttered any word on its upcoming tablets. It is actually the tradition of the company that it keeps all info about its new products in secret. Here, we are talking about the possible tech specs and features of iPad 3, which are compiled from the recent rumors.

Display screen: Apple’s famous Retina Display was expected to appear on iPad 2. The iPhone 4 display did not land on the second version iPad, however. It forced rumor mills to predict that the next iPad will have high resolution display developed by Apple. Meanwhile, some other rumors on various occasions came up with the reports that Apple has signed deals with companies like LG, Samsung and Sharp for display panels for iPad 3. TechRadar in May 2011 reported that iPad 3 will feature Samsung’s AMOLED screen. Wall Street Journal in November talked about an Apple deal with Sharp for LCD displays for iPad 3.

Processor: It is simply possible that the iPad 3 will have a far better processor than its predecessor. Processor of iPad 2 encloses Apple’s A5 chipset, so we can certainly hope that Apple will roll out an A6 chipset for its next-gen iPad and iPhone 5. It is almost sure that the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core ARM-based processor. It is actually high time that Apple should bring out an iPad version with a quad core processor. Its Android rivals like Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime have stared to run on NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad core processor.

Dock connector: Unlike its previous versions, the new iPad will reportedly have a 30 pin dock connector. It will make iPad 3 more useful for users.

NFC chip: Yet another iPad 3 rumor is that the device will sport the much-lauded Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. Cult of Mac has reported that iPad 3 will have NFC chip to send data between devices in a matter of seconds.

Thunderbolt port: Some rumor mills have even suggested that the new iPad will have a high speed Thunderbolt port. While talking about a Thunderbolt port for iPad 3, we should remember that both its predecessors don’t have even a USB port. So, there is less chance that Apple will add a Thunderbolt port on its next iPad.

More storage: The iPad 2 offers three familiar 16/32/64GB storage options. So, as some rumormongers suggested, the new iPad will have a 128GB storage option. But, many analysts don’t agree with the speculation.

4G LTE: According to CNET, the new iPad will have a Qualcomm 4G LTE Gobi 4000 chip for next generation connectivity. 4G LTE is several times faster than its predecessor 3G.

Thinner and slighter: Certainly, the new iPad will have a thinner and slighter body. Apple used to make its new product upgrades thinner than its predecessors.
